Don't know how I missed this, but I've had this thought, too. The last time I recall it being suggested, though, it wasn't well-received for some odd reason. It makes so much more sense this way, and really helps streamline the profession. Seems like everything we do, we're fighting our skills as much as the enemy.

GW ranger forums are ja, packed full of ideas to improve rangers in a balanced way, and have been for several years now. ANet just isn't interested in achnowledging the problem. Work on getting ANet to think about this and then watch the ideas come, but until then it's pointless.

Rangers in PvE have been broken a very, very long time.

You are declaring it pointless as if it is the universal truth of the subject. If I cook a casserole and you taste it, your reaction might be to say "It's gross." "It's gross" means that its universally disgusting and the casserole has been permanently branded with grossness. If this is the case, anyone and everyone who tastes the casserole would also find it distasteful. The obvious problem is that there is bound be be someone who enjoys the casserole. After all I created the recipe, so chances are is that i like it.

I created this thread and I don't think it's entirely irrelevant. People who added to the discussion also think that it's not completely pointless. More so, even if it is completely pointless, it is still interesting to see peoples ideas and creativity, and how much they differ. And this isn't meant to be taken as another "Ranger is broken" thread.

I like that idea of making preparations into actual preparations, wonder what the arguments against it were.

@Fay - If you're not going to contribute then stop posting here. Most of us are aware of the unlikely chance that the ranger will be updated. That doesn't mean we can't discuss things we'd like to see to improve the ranger.

As far as the preparation change, it seems to make a lot of sense. I think the only complaint would come after this change (say, if Anet were to change preparations), then the recharge time and the number of arrows prepared would be long and small, respectively.

I'd like to see some changes for PvE elite bow attack, something along the line like these,

1. Re-badge Terminal Velocity and call it Punishing Shot. (5e,12s recharge ?)

2. Change Broad head arrow to
"If it hits, target foe is Dazed for 5...10...15 seconds,
and if target foe is using a skill that skill is interrupted.
This attack has half the normal range"

or

"You shoot a broad head arrow that moves slower than normal.
If it hits, target foe is Dazed for 5...10...15 seconds,
and if target foe is using a skill that skill is interrupted.
Knock down adjacent foes if it is block for 1..2..4 seconds"

3. Change "Archer's Signet" to,
"While wielding a bow, your next 0..1..3 bow attacks cause deep wound" (1/2s cast, 12s recharge ?)

4. Change "Poison Arrow" to,
"Your target becomes Poisoned for 5...17...20 seconds. Also cause deep wound( maybe daze ?) for 3..7..10 seconds if target is enchanted( or hex,or 1 or more conditions?)"

5. Move "Quick shots" to expertise(or marksmanship?), and change it to,
"Rapidly fire 1..3..5 arrows at target foe, each arrow deal +30 damage."
Probably hard to implement due to extra animation. But it's will be a cool finishing attack.

Re-badge "Flail" and call it "Rapid fire"(but with bow).

Extend the duration on some preparations(maybe 2/3 of ele's attunement duration?), and cut the cast time to 1sec would be cool too.

I'm sorry I posted an opinion different to yours, I didn't realise that was against any rules. btw, who died and left you in charge of who should and should not post?

I would dearly love there to be some changes to the ranger class to make them relevent again, and yes there are many good ideas posting in this thread, but this is just yet another thread of pointless ideas, you could have posted in any one of a number of identical threads. But this won't be the last of these threads, this isn't a problem, just a reality check to say ANet isn't listening so don't expect anything. Particularly amusing when the PvP crowd always turn up to say rangers are fine and any change would be imba.

It is disheartening that there's no current plan to rework the ranger, but as long as it is in such an absurd state of affairs, I and many others will continue to let our voices be heard. We're not alone, either; elementalists are just as upset and have every right to be. Not even warriors look that great after the dervish update. I refuse to be quiet after a select few professions were blasted to the moon and won't let the Live Team forget they've left the rest behind.

Guess what. I agree with you. But it doesn't hurt to speculate and discuss on the off chance that the Live Team passes by and gets some ideas.

Its a discussion thread about how we would like rangers to be updated and your sole contribution, again, is to say "no point, anet wont fix rangers, stop talking about it".

Who cares if it isnt going to happen, its nice to talk about just incase.

It was never my intent to stop anyone posting ideas, I have posted many such ideas myself over the years (yes years!); I was just saying for a reality check. I've kind of given up hope, rather sad really compared to the fun and "viable" versitility that rangers used to have. If ever we get any suggestion that ANet may be looking at rangers, wow, these forums would light up!

And agree about Ele too, though to be fair, they had it very good for a while so their wilderness years have not been as many as those of the ranger, and are still in a better place today. Rangers can't even get any equipment to support 3 of our attribute lines!

Bows aren't ideal for dedicated pet and trap builds, but weapon swaps are supposed to be a thing in this game. Admittedly I do want to see more synergy between BM and the bow.

However if you've no hope left, then obvious these threads are not for you, and when the update comes, you should be grateful of others and not complain if it isn't good enough for you. Perhaps go dig up your old posts, let's see your years of suggestions and if they still hold true today?

I hate how Anets ignored the ranger issues but I think the easiest fix would be just morph expertise and marksmanship together. When I play I hate having to spread my points out between 3 attributes. Now you can basically only have to do the marksmanship/expertise attribute and us wilderness survival to get a bit of degen or longer life (trolls unglent or however it’s spelt) or beast mastery to have an off tank but I still think pets aren't as good. This wouldn't be a permanent fix obviously but it will make the class so much better.

Simply compare ranger skills to other classes equivalents and bring them up to speed.

They nerfed traps but rits get to basically set up spirit after spirit that target enemies? My ranger SOS's where he used to set traps.
SOS @12 > Traps @16. Thats not right. Even when traps were at their peak, it's not like we were the best farmers.

Dervs get insta flash enchantments. Preps take forever. Makes no sense really. Since we need preps to make any impact in hm.

Barrage preps etc are removed? Why? Every arrow should hit for whatever prep is on it or its not a true elite. Poison etc should affect every arrow. That's why splinter barrages is the only form ran nowadays.

Pet AI should be better and it should leave an exploitable corpse. To protect from abuse, let damage etc scale up more at 13+. Down time needs to be less. I have switched to hearty pets since all they are just meat shields now.

Expertise should do more. Soul reaping make necros the jack of all trades. Investing heavily into expertise brings me no where near the flexibility that SR provides.

HERES A HINT AT HOW USELESS THE RANGER HAS BECOME. We are targeted just about last by enemy ai. Im the only human and im targeted last? Learn to abuse this. I sometimes SOS and bring destruction etc cuz I can run around in front and not get targeted. Sup expertise, radiant armor, STAFF since it doesn't matter. I'd try to abuse traps if they weren't useless in hm.

Thank God for D3! Diablo 2 had rangers (amazons) that kicked ass using a bow. Imagine that. GW turned the ranger into joke.

It would be interesting if they made preps similar to flash enchants in terms of activation. Nature spirits should have their activation times reduced and maybe recharge times on certain ones as well.

Traps I don't think they can do much about. The activation time is about right and speeding them up would just nullify the use of certain trap-placing skills as well as remove the inherant property of being able to be interupted during the process. Traps are just useless because of the effective playstyle being going forwards rather than backwards (pulling).

Whoa don't even compare D2 to GW, it was epic. Sure it was imbalanced but when you're playing a class you know what you're playing, A barb feels like a barb and zon like a zon. With the balance carebears in GW you have classes that end up like nerf versions of themselves and pretend to be another class, eles healers or ranger summoners. Easy fix really, improve preps make barrage not remove preps, but oh no the balance.

Flash Enchants really came out of the need for the derv to not constantly stop moving, so a bow wielder doesn't have that problem. They can rework either activation or duration, it's the combination of both being bad that's frustrating.

If I don't feel like using Barrage, I go with ED. I chain Pene/Sund Attack, and use Savage Shot mainly for spells for the bonus damage - I'm not too concerned with interrupting for the sake of interrupting, since my Mesmer heroes can do that.

Expertise 12+1+1
Marks 12+1
---
Penetrating Attack
Sundering Attack
Savage Shot
"Save Yourselves!"
Read the Wind
Expert's Dexterity
EBSoH
optional (Pain Inverter, EVAS, etc)
---
2x 15^50 Flatbows of Fortitude - one Vamp, one Zealous

If you want to improve Rangers in PvE, split Barrage/Volley for PvP, and change the PvE version to not remove preparations.

Fast, or flash, preparations would make using multiple preps more viable, even just reducing activation time to one second might help.

The idea is interesting but it's currently one of the few skills in PvE that can actually hang with today's power creep. Though I wouldn't mind seeing it moved to Expertise to give the ranger exclusive rights.

I agree, but we don't necessarily need the ability to use them while running. I'd be happy with 1/4 second activation or 90s duration.

Give the Ranger some decent energy management, a good IAS, a few decent damage skills and make some of the useful Nature Rituals have a lower casting time and ideally recharge.
Don't bother with Beast Mastery. In fact, take a couple of the useless skills in BM, turn them into skills with the given properties and put them into Expertise or Marksmanship.

Perhaps even make Strength of Honor work with Ranged attacks, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea.
